Botany is also called “Plant Science”, is a branch of Biology in which we deal with different scientific aspects of Plant. “Theophrastus” is regarded as father of Botany for his works on plants. His major works are stored in “Enquiry into Plants( Historia Plantarum)”and “On the causes of Plants”.
A person who specialises in this field is termed as “Botanist” or “Phytologist”.
Term “Botany” is derived from Greek word βοτάνη (botanē) meaning “pasture”, “grass”, or “fodder”.
Study of Botany and use of plants for medicinal purposes are included in “Herbalism” a term given at its origin. Plants have been used in medical treatment in human history and same tradition is still practiced today. (Medicines developed today uses compounds extracted from plants).
Considering epoch, we are in “Holocene” epoch currently and it shows records for study of Botanical things as far as 10,000 years ago. There are many ancient writings and classification details recorded from ancient time.
